THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
A comprehensive view of how global warming and policies to lower greenhouse gas emissions affect human health. Participants learn how climate change and fossil fuel combustion affect air quality, water quality, food safety and availability, exposure to environmental toxins, infectious disease transmission, and morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases; and which segments of the population are most vulnerable. Once you are completely depressed and overwhelmed, we revive and inspire you by introducing the elements of healthy climate policy and the public health benefits of climate solutions. Presented in a participatory format with case presentations.
Time: 60 minutes, including Q & A.
DANGER AND OPPORTUNITY:
This presentation stands the climate and health connection on its head. We begin with the epidemiology and economics of our current epidemic of lifestyle diseases and the contribution of fossil fuel combustion via air pollution, physical inactivity and industrial agriculture to the burden of chronic disease, then build a policy framework for healthy and sustainable communities.
FROM ANGST TO ACTION:
BEST PRACTICES IN CLIMATE AND HEALTH COMMUNICATION
The health effects of climate change bring home its immediacy and the urgent need for action but as health professionals we know that playing the fear card doesn't often change behavior. How can we talk about climate and health in ways that move people from apathy and helplessness to active support for healthy climate policy? This training was developed for health professionals who want to help build a broad social movement for climate action. It is designed to turn participants into confident and effective messengers prepared to speak out in their communities as advocates for healthy climate policy.
