One fifth of US greenhouse gas emissions come from coal, oil, and gas extracted from public lands. If all the fossil fuels from federal lands were burned, they'd consume one quarter of the world's remaining carbon budget.
To avoid catastrophic global warming, 80% of coal, 50% of natural gas, and 30% of oil global reserves must stay underground, but
the US leases public land for mining and drilling at below market prices, creating a multibillion dollar subsidy for the fossil fuel industry. President Obama has the executive power to stop this.
