Healthy Food

HEALTHY FOOD = HEALTHY PEOPLE

video courtesy of Union of Concerned Scientists
INDUSTRIALIZED AGRICULTURE is unhealthy for us and our planet.  It depletes the soil, relies on climate polluting synthetic fertilizer, and produces unhealthy food which promotes DIABETES, HEART DISEASE, AND CANCER.

RESTORATIVE FARMING HEALS
PEOPLE AND PLANET
CLEANER WATER

Substituting compost for synthetic fertilizer, planting cover crops, and using no till methods enriches the carbon content of soil and decreases nitrogen and pesticide runoff into rivers and lakes, lowering the amount of algae blooms and toxins in the water we use for drinking and recreation.

SAFER FOOD
Sustainable farming methods decrease the need for herbicides and pesticides which currently enter our food and water, causing birth defects and cancer.

Producing a variety of foods for local markets will make our food system less vulnerable to regional droughts, storms, pests, and plant diseases.

Growing our own produce here in the US decreases the risk of food borne diseases
AMERICAN MADE

So much of our cropland is given over to growing corn for fuel and animal feed that an increasing amount of our food is grown outside the US.  Imported produce has a higher risk of contamination.

LOWER PRICES, LESS WASTE

Changing US farm policy and subsidies to encourage production of fruits and vegetables and system wide changes to stop food waste (40% of our food) will lower prices and make these foods more available for everyone.  We're not necessarily suggesting that you go dumpster diving, but the video next door shows just how much good food goes to landfills, where it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
SMALL CHANGES, BIG BENEFITS
A few servings more of produce each day
and a few servings less of red meat per week
would cut greenhouse gases from food in half.
